Brialmont, Mortsel (B).
Living at Fort IV.
Project Brialmont has a unique location on Mortsel's Town Square, the station and Fort IV. The composition and design of the buildings results in a series of more enclosed outdoor spaces with open connections. The use of materials connects with the historic military structures in the fort.
Integration - The housing project on the Dosfellei is part of Fort IV. The project restores the fort's original green footprint, which incorporates 3 compact residential buildings. The volumes increase from 3, over 4 to 6 floors: a modest volume that connects to the houses in the Fortstraat and a larger volume that relates to the new City Square. The composition of the three buildings is aimed at forming a strong ensemble on the Dosfellei and at the same time offering views of the fort. Together with the residential development, efforts were made to build a public landscape to complete the slow traffic course around the fort.
Design - The division into 3 volumes enables the emergence of valuable penetrations and vistas, which in turn enhance the fort's public and accessible character. The buildings appear as all-sided volumes, because the green qualities and orientation are each on one opposite side. The new residential buildings are an extension of Fort IV's existing heritage, characterized by layered brick buildings. Due to its residential function, the project has a more informal character. It balances between the stricter image of the military infrastructure and the more public nature of the town hall and the police station. The architecture is characterised by clear tectonics and rhythm with generous interior and exterior spaces. The terraces, entrances and windows are complemented by simple but meticulous detailing.
Quality of life - Each volume houses a specific typology: double-sided apartments, corner apartments and three-gable apartments. Every type is related to the scale, shape and orientation of the volumes. The plan mainly consists of corner and three-gable apartments that all have a view of the fort and/or the Town Square. Both the individual homes and their outdoor spaces thus focus on ideal combinations of sun and vision. The spacious private outdoor spaces are an essential quality for living on the outskirts of Fort IV.

A maximum of 2 images or videos can be on the same row, with at least 1 column of space between them.
'Panels' always accompany corresponding content and never stand alone.
