Wattland, Mechelen (B).
Residential area between the city boulevard and wetland.
The Wattland district is located in a large-scale urban development in which compactly built figures structure a unifying landscape between the city and Dyle. While the choice of materials and the architectural image of the various districts can stand alone, they share a morphology and the precisely defined relationships that the buildings enter into with the surrounding landscape.
The residential area is located between a future city boulevard — the main access road to the city center — and the Dyle. In the center of the district, there is a roadway with an alternating morphology of undeveloped and built-up spaces. Four important open spaces structure the district: a central public square, two collective gardens, and the public wetland on the banks of the Dyle. The ensemble that makes up the built space consists of a sturdy but articulated edge on the city boulevard, smaller buildings as interior for the neighborhood, and three sturdy, free-standing buildings in the wetland. Within the same architectural language, the buildings in the ensemble evolve from formal-urban (on the side of the city boulevard) to more informally peripheral (on the inner street and wetland).
The design includes a diverse range of housing with apartments, groundbound apartments, groundbound houses and co-housing. The buildings and typologies always respond to their specific location within the neighborhood. With the themes “garden, square, yard, niche, balcony”, the design explores the appropriate transitions between the dynamics of public space and the intimacy of the private interior.
