Zwartzustersvest, Mechelen (B).
Care homes take place in the city.
The Zwartzustersvest project consists of an ensemble of buildings containing a wide range of (care) housing, community spaces and a medical community center.
The design starts from the undeveloped, public space. This includes the release of a historic fleet and a number of fordable (picking) gardens. The Vliet and the adjacent quays form a crossing from the Vesten to the historic center of the city. The gardens provide a setting for the former hospital (part of the historic residence of Magdalene of Austria) and the Peter and Paul Church.
The community spaces and the medical community center are located on both sides of the Vliet and, due to their location and design, are firmly anchored in the neighborhood and the city. The various forms of (care) housing are specifically designed from their location on the Vesten, the Vliet or the (picking) gardens.
