Zwartzustersvest, Mechelen (B).

Care homes take place in the city.

The Zwartzustersvest project consists of an ensemble of buildings containing a wide range of (care) housing, community spaces and a medical community center.

The design starts from the undeveloped, public space. This includes the release of a historic fleet and a number of fordable (picking) gardens. The Vliet and the adjacent quays form a crossing from the Vesten to the historic center of the city. The gardens provide a setting for the former hospital (part of the historic residence of Magdalene of Austria) and the Peter and Paul Church.

The community spaces and the medical community center are located on both sides of the Vliet and, due to their location and design, are firmly anchored in the neighborhood and the city. The various forms of (care) housing are specifically designed from their location on the Vesten, the Vliet or the (picking) gardens.

The project concerns a high-density urban expansion. Nevertheless, the morphology of the city center is approached appropriately and views of buildings with cultural-historical value are preserved.

The value of the plan lies in the unbuilt space: freeing up a historic fleet brings us a new, public crossing. Behind the hospital and the theatre, we create fordable (picking) gardens, green oases in the heart of the city.

The public crossing on the Vliet is flanked by a low-rise community center and a residential tower. The edges of the fleet were designed in a nature-inclusive way with open joints for permanent attachment of aquatic plants and small cavities as nesting sites for bats.

A compact but special residential building is being built behind the historic garden wall. It guides the way through to the adjacent picking garden.

The courtyards of the care housing project have a bucolic quality. Frivolous extensions provide spacious terraces near the living areas of the living groups.

The residential tower is a prominent moment along the Vesten and announces the new public crossing along the vacated fleet.
